Interruption to HLS not captured by player

I am looking to find a way to create a failover to a backup stream should a primary be interrupted. I have been looking for an event to capture when a stream is interrupted. I created a loop to see what the current state is with getState and find that when an HLS live stream is interrupted the playback stops but the player still reports back as "playing" which makes the use of onError, onBuffer, onIdle impossible. If I hit refresh and then hit play, it will play the last segment of the primary stream that was interrupted, and then it will buffer, and that I can capture. However, its impractical to ask users to hit refresh and watch the last 10 seconds of something again, then finally trigger a buffer event, then load the backup stream.
